Science History Institute
Philadelphia, PA
The Science History Institute, formed by the merger of the Chemical Heritage Foundation and the Life Sciences Foundation, is located in the Old City Historic District just a few blocks from the Liberty Bell. The museum is the premier institution preserving the history of the life sciences, biotechnology, the chemical sciences, and engineering. The Institute’s goal is to collect, preserve, and exhibit historical artifacts; engage communities of scientists and the scientifically curious public; and tell the compelling stories of those responsible for extraordinary scientific achievement.
AOS Architects has collaborated with the Science History Institute on multiple projects focused on the growth and expansion of its mission. AOS prepared a master plan for the Institute addressing planned growth over the next 7–10 years with the goals of phasing improvements that relocate collections from the basement, improve facility access and loading logistics, re-organize the administrative offices, improve energy efficiency and sustainability goals.
Building on that master plan, AOS has completed two phases of renovation that have meaningfully transformed the Institute's spaces. The first phase converted archive collection space into a podcast studio dedicated to the Institute’s flagship podcast and photography studio, bringing new life to the building's lower level. The second phase focused on the renovations of the main entry and lobby, creating a welcoming arrival experience for visitors. New exhibit space in the main lobby introduces visitors to the Institute’s remarkable collections.
